Cultural preferences for formal versus intuitive reasoning
نویسندگان
چکیده
The authors examined cultural preferences for formal versus intuitive reasoning among East Asian (Chinese and Korean), Asian American, and European American university students. We investigated categorization (Studies 1 and 2), conceptual structure (Study 3), and deductive reasoning (Studies 3 and 4). In each study a cognitive conflict was activated between formal and intuitive strategies of reasoning. European Americans, more than Chinese and Koreans, set aside intuition in favor of formal reasoning. Conversely, Chinese and Koreans relied on intuitive strategies more than European Americans. Asian Americans’ reasoning was either identical to that of European Americans, or intermediate. Differences emerged against a background of similar reasoning tendencies across cultures in the absence of conflict between formal and intuitive strategies. © 2002 Ara Norenzayan. Bipolar Preference Modelling and Aggregation in Decision Support
The paper discusses the use of positive and negative reasons when preferences about alternative options have to be considered. Besides explaining the intuitive and formal situations where such a bipolar reasoning is used, the paper shows how it is possible to generalise the concordance/discordance principle in preference aggregation and applie it to the problem of aggregating preferences expres...
متن کاملCultural Differences in Belief Bias Associated with Deductive Reasoning?
Norenzayan, Smith, Jun Kim, and Nisbett (2002) investigated cultural differences in the use of intuitive versus formal reasoning in 4 experiments. Our comment concerns the 4th experiment where Norenzayan et al. reported that, although there were no cultural differences in accuracy on abstract logical arguments, Koreans made more errors than U.S. undergraduates in judging the logical validity of...

متن کاملAdapting Perception, Action, and Technology for Mathematical Reasoning
Formal mathematical reasoning provides an illuminating test case for understanding how humans can think about things that they did not evolve to comprehend. People engage in algebraic reasoning by (1) creating new assemblies of perception and action routines that evolved originally for other purposes (reuse), (2) adapting those routines to better fit the formal requirements of mathematics (adap...
متن کاملPreference Trees: A Language for Representing and Reasoning about Qualitative Preferences
We introduce a novel qualitative preference representation language, preference trees, or P-trees. We show that the language is intuitive to specify preferences over combinatorial domains and it extends existing preference formalisms such as LP-trees, ASO-rules and possibilistic logic. We study reasoning problems with P-trees and obtain computational complexity results.
